The Ultimate Guide to Prepare You for Your Secret 3K Run/Walk
If you’re a new runner like I was a couple years ago, you probably have no idea how long- or may I say, how shockingly short a 3K run/walk can be.
When I started my running journey, I had no idea what kind of gear I would have needed in order to be at a comfortable start.
Luckily enough, I got to interview Trish Slipp, our Running Room ambassador, about the best gear to purchase before your first run.
“The Secret 3K is the perfect distance for beginners to run or walk. I started my running journey three years ago and the best part about starting to run is that you need very little equipment aside from a good pair of shoes.” shared Trish.
Trish said that The New Balance 880’s are her personal favourite, however, the Running Room can provide a gait analysis in store or online to determine what shoe would be best for you.
Since the Secret 3K is all about celebrating our right to be free to run, we are motivated and empowered to run our 3K regardless of the elements. In the beginning of March, this could be anything including rain, snow, wind or darkness.
Trish shared some of these awesome head gears and toque’s to use to stay warm during your run/walk with The Secret 3K.
Purchase this Running Room Fleece Toque to ensure that you’re staying warm during your run.
“Up to 50% of your body heat is lost through your head, so make sure you keep it covered in cold weather.” said Trish.
Trish emphasized how important it is to keep yourself warm if you’re running during the winter. Check out these convertible gloves for your best and warmest experience.
If you’re running in the snow, make sure you keep your feet warm and dry with these winter running socks.
If it is still icy where you are running, it will not be enough to just see that there is ice – Trish recommends wearing traction aids over the soles of your shoes for greater traction.
Regarding apparel, Trish shared a great formula to follow in order to stay warm, dry, and comfortable.
This formula follows three layers. Your Base Layer, the layer next to your skin which should be light, soft, and moisture-wicking. Next, would be your Mid Layer which would focus on keeping you warm. For this layer, opt for fleece or synthetic insulation. Lastly, you have your Outer Layer. This should be windproof, waterproof, and breathable.

Trish explained how as a woman she doesn’t always feel safe to run outside and gave us tips on what she used to ensure her safety while running.
“As a woman I have felt this first hand and have called off runs if It required me going out at night alone. We can help build a safer space and a safer race by bringing your household out and running together and ensuring that you are properly visible.”
Stay safe in the dark with this Running Room Headgear as well as this Nathan Streak Safety Vest to ensure your visibility to any potential traffic coming your way in the dark.
